The most important things about our dogs are to keep them happy. Taking them out for a walk plays a big part of their happiness and you may think that a large garden is enough but that is not accurate. Our dogs need to go out for a walk outside with us. Otherwise, having your dog at home would be like to have him caged and forget an important part of their development, such as natural impulses to mark territory, seek and recognize odors, have a relationship with other dogs, investigate and burn all their energy day to rest better.

Enjoy the walk

First thought to go for a walk with your dog does not have to be a nightmare. It should be something relaxing and a simple activity that connects you and your dog. Sometimes dogs face a great anxiety which can cause pulling the belt, but it is not the fault of our dog, only we are responsible for teaching them how to walk with us. When you go outside, the first thing you should do is try to teach your pet how to function with you and this can be a great part of the fun and will make an experience more enjoyable for both of you. You must be patient and not expect your dog to know how to act in public or how to walk right beside your leg. Apart from the basic factor of this story, you could do other things that will make you spend some nice time outside while taking your dog or dogs for a walk:

  • Meet up with your friends and their dogs

After going out with your pet several times at the same place, it can get boring for both of you. Try arranging a walk with your friends and ask them to bring their dogs. Going in a group can be very fun for all of you. You will have some time talking to your friends and your dogs will interact with each other.

  • Metal detecting

This activity has been very popular in the recent years so why not doing two, instead of one useful thing at the same time? If you have a metal detector, take it with you while going to the park, beach or any other place with your dogs. They can even help you find items by digging or pointing at the places in case they notice something. With a little bit of practice and experience, your dogs might surprise you with their researching abilities and become an irreplaceable metal detecting factor.

I personally have found this garrett 400 model to be the best for me, it’s light enough that I can get away with it. If you don’t have a very well trained dog it might be hard.

  • Training

Our bodies need physical activity just as animals’ do so you can have a training together and make it your daily routine. Going for a morning, afternoon or night run with your dog will make you feel like having a partner that you can do everything with.

Remember that not every dog has different needs and strength. A small breed of dogs cannot run or follow your step the same way some big dogs can so do not force them to. Learn how your dog functions and how you function together and go for a little adventure with your lifetime buddy.

Dog exercise is a key for the animal to have a healthy life and proper development. Mainly puppies and young dogs accumulate a large amount of energy needed to burn during the day. By not taking a dog for regular walks, you can cause the animal to behave inappropriately and do things like biting destroy plants and furniture, plus create you anxiety and stress.

Most dogs do not have enough with a walk around the block; they need to run free and burn all the energy. To do this, you need a walk that lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Not all dogs require the same exercise time, depending on age and breed, some need to spend more or less energy.

  • Puppies

Puppies, being in full growth, are very active and need to burn a lot of energy. It is best to start doing two walks a day of 20 minutes each. Start slowly so that your dog gets used to the exercise. It is not advisable to start with very long walks.

You can use a ball or toy to play with your puppy and have fun while preparing for training. If you are away from home, do not forget to bring water to hydrate your puppy after exercise and sweets to reward good behavior.

Walk and exercise are two entirely different things; if you take your dog for a walk without any type of exercise, the dog only wastes the energy. However, if you aim to train your dog, the time and intensity of exercise will be determined largely by his breed.

  • Working dogs

Labradors, German Shepherds or Golden Retriever require more exercise than other breeds. They are dogs that need to run a lot and require at least 2 walks of 1 hour each day for spacious places. Ideally, complement these walks with 2 other quieter different spaces so that they can exercise the mind and smell.

  • Nordic dogs

Husky is also part of working dogs  group but with a difference that they were created to work shooting and, as such, they need to exercise at least twice a week.

  • Hunting dogs

Dogs like Beagles need walks that allow them to run in order to keep the muscles strong and exercise the smell sensitivity. These types of dogs have tracking instinct highly developed and as such, they need to continually exercise it. These breeds require intense walks of 1 hour on the field or in the forest and 2 quieter walks. Bring a ball or throw a toy for your dog and make him run.

  • Small breeds

Shih Tzu, Yorkshire, French bulldog, Pomeranian, Chihuahua and similar breeds are not satisfied with only home or garden runs. They also need to go for a walk on spacious places and run free, only requiring less time than previous races. 2 walks of 30 minutes with exercise included and another 2 calmer and short are enough to burn all their energy. Be especially careful with dogs with respiratory problems such as French bulldog, as they run out of breath quickly and need shorter but more frequent walks.

It is very important that you consider the time of exercise your dog needs before adopting one. All indications above refer to daily walks, not weekly. So, your dog needs exercise every day.

The Pomeranian breed is very popular and loved among dog lovers. Whether it’s for their character or their adorable look, people love these toy dogs and mostly keep them indoor. They are fluffy and the fur makes them look like little teddy bears so barely anyone can resist their charm. Just the fact that they are so small, gives away a feeling that they need special care hence they seem so fragile but of course, every dog needs attention and care. Overall, these dogs are healthy and live pretty long but of course, there could come to complications and possible diseases.

Here are some of the problems that Pomeranians could face:

  • Luxating patella

This alteration is very common in dogs of the Pomeranian breed and involves the formation of structural defects in the knee joint, which causes the kneecap out of its natural position so that your pet can submit lameness flashing in one or both hind limbs. Among the predisposing factors breed, age and genetics are included. This problem is usually congenital or occurs during development.

Depending on the severity of dislocation, these are classified into four grades:

  • Grade I

The patella is in the trochlear groove but can dislocate or subluxate.

  • Grade II

Dislocation can occur spontaneously. The patella may dislocate hand but is reduced with gentle handling.

  • Grade III

The patella dislocates almost all the time but can easily be cut by hand.

  • Grade IV

The dog almost does not use the limb and has flexed. It cannot be reduced by hand.

If your Pomeranian has a problem of claudicating it is important to go with your veterinarian for a checkup and he will tell you whether this is the issue or any other problem, since treatment is by surgery, which varies depending on the degree of dislocation I presented.

  • Tracheal collapse

Tracheal collapse is a problem in which the trachea has a narrowing which increases resistance to air flow. Some dogs have a congenital problem but can also develop it at some point in their lives. Small breeds like Pomeranian have a higher risk of developing this disease. Generally, dogs that exhibit this problem have no signs unless they perform the exercise, which presented pictures of coughing and difficulty breathing. In more severe cases there may be a loss of consciousness.

This disease has no definitive cure, but can be given medical treatment, reducing the signs and can keep Pomeranian with good quality of life. It is important that if your Pomeranian has this problem, not to submit to intense exercise; nor let for long periods in places with excessive heat and especially prevent overweight.

  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca

This disease occurs when there is a decrease in the production of Pomeranian tears, so you can see a series of clinical manifestations such as mucus, attached to the ocular surface, cornea dry and dull, and sometimes corneal ulcers.

It is a very painful problem and should be treated as soon as possible by your veterinarian to prevent further eye damage.

The Pomeranian breed is a favorite among those looking for a Toy dog. It is a mischievous and very curious animal, quiet inside the home, but with a strong dose of character on the outside, like most small breeds. Direct descendant of German Spitz, is considered the oldest race of Central Europe.

Their character is cheerful, affectionate, intelligent, and not aggressive; it is a marvel of the race.

  • Advice for future owners

In principle, they have a very long-lived race. Countless times we have seen an elderly Pomeranian walking with his master in the streets or parks. However, if we want our Pomeranian to live many years, we should take care of it. First, monitor his ears, because dogs, like people, can suffer from otitis because of some air stream or action of an external parasite (fleas, ticks, etc.). We should be also careful that no air currents inside the house to avoid colds. Vaccinations and control the anal sacs, if they are infected are very painful and suffer badly.

The food for Pomeranian’s should be around 50 to 80 gr. a day but the quality should be especially good. Clean, fresh water every day, and you can also give them fruit.

  • How does this breed behave at home? Their relationship with children and the elderly.

At present, the Pomeranian enjoys an extraordinary diffusion, mainly because it is an ideal place to live for a home animal, especially if it is a small apartment. However, the success of this dog is not only because of its small size, but also its vividness and, above all, his character. The only races with an extraordinary character, such as Pomeranian, have occupied and occupy a privileged place in the history of the dog.

With children and elderly it behaves wonderfully, they are always aware of them and they will never make a bad gesture, they are always around the owner and even become inseparable.

  • Training

If you have a Pomeranian dog, it is very likely to want to learn to educate this race and want to discover all its secrets and care you need. At the beginning, it is always good to inform yourself about the pomeraniantrainingcharacteristics of the race and its history. The Pomeranian is a “toy” dog for being small. Their ancestors are in Iceland and Lapland and were sled dogs.

Pomeranian is a very active and loyal dog. It is good to take our dog for a walk three times a day for thirty minutes to get tired. A tired dog will be calmer and will be much easier to pay attention to everything we want to teach. Another thing we have to consider is to establish rules. Although dogs are loyal, it is necessary to be firm when you educate them and not let anything go outside the rules. Otherwise, our dogs take the opportunity to take the lead, and we want to obey us.

The best way to educate your dog is the positive method, or differently said, the reward system. Every time your dog obeys or does something, you should give him a prize (dog treats or petting) to understand that he has done a good job. However, when he does something wrong or disobey, you should say ‘’no’’ firmly and ignore him for a while.

  • Constant care

This race is usually healthy and used to live many years. However, it is always advisable to go to the vet regularly to make sure it is in good health condition and prevent many possible diseases. Hair of Pomeranian dogs also needs special care; you should brush it frequently to remove dirt and fallen hair. Grooming is also important but do not abuse the baths as they could damage their skin and fur.

Educating a Pomeranian is much easier than it seems if you follow the steps properly. Do not forget that all dogs need a routine, balanced diet and affection. If you have patience and spend at least ten minutes a day to training your dog, you will see positive results.
